Year 5 Teacher
Year 5 Staff:

In maths this term, we will be covering: area and perimeter; multiplication & division; fractions, decimals and percentages. Please ensure your children continue to access Mathletics and Timestable Rockstars to enable them to access the year 5 curriculum more easily. Knowing timestables 'by heart' is essential to enable the children to succeed with confidence in these areas.
We are currently reading Journey to Jo'burg by Beverley Naidoo, to coincide with our Africa topic. This book has some mature themes, most notably Apartheid. We will then read Henry's Freedom Box which will lead to work and discussion around slavery of people with an African heritage. Finally, we will read about the life of Nelson Mandela and produce biographies.
In RE, we will be covering the topic of Inspirational people (which fits in well with our English work) ensuring the children know that Jesus was the most inspirational person that ever was. We will then move on to the topic of Reconcilliation, discussing the importance of recognising when we have made a mistake and being sorry for this. Discussion about St. Edith Stein has recently raised the topic of Nazi Germany and the difficult conversation about concentration camps, particularly Birkenhau and Auschwitz. We have aimed to handle these topics sensititively and candidly and appreciate your support, should your child raise questions with you at home.
In Science, we will start off with studying 'animals including humans' and identfiying the stages of development in a human life cycle. We will then be moving on to living things and their habitats. In spring term 2, we will be going to Wirral County Park (Thurstaston) to support the understanding of these topics. We will participate in pond dipping sessions and a geology walk! We're really looking forward to it!
Our topics this term are as follows: Rock and Roll dance; invasion games; gymnastics and exploring, striking and fielding. Please ensure your child has both the correct kit for both indoor and outdoor PE lessons as we will be outside for PE at least once a week and we are still enduring cold temperatures! They must have trainers.
Our topic for spring is Africa. We will be learning about the continent and its many countries, famous landmarks, rivers and mountains. The children will learn about Fairtrade and present to the rest of the school during fairtrade fortnight!
