The Smeds and The Smoos

Date: 5th Feb 2020 @ 2:02pm

As an introduction to our New Year in school, we decided to take a look at Our British Values topics Individual Liberty and Mutual Respect. We did this by sharing the brilliant new Julia Donaldson book” The Smeds and the Smoos”. They didn’t like each other, Smeds were Red, Smoos were Blue, and the Grandparents didn’t want them to play together. We shared the story and waited to see how the children reacted. “It matters how good you are."  Said One of our Little Acorns.  “They might bump into each other." said another, they did Janet met Bill.  The children asked Questions, What is the green thing? What are they doing? They can play together can't they?  The Grandparents keep telling them not to be together, they thought they might run away.  They used a rocket to be together, the grandparents went together to find them, they shared when looking for their grandchildren. They couldn’t find them, they looked in different places, and they went home. Janet and Bill were there all along, they had a baby, they had a Purple baby! They were happy they all sang and played together. To celebrate the Purple Baby the children mixed Blue and Red Play dough together, they have a fantastic time experimenting.
The children felt that Janet and Bill were different but that did not matter.
As part of this work too we have acquired a new range of dolls that promote respect. Each time we share the story the children meet a new friend. Today they decided our doll was to be called Purple due to her hair colour .Who will we meet tomorrow? The children met all different kinds of dolls, some short, with long hair, with artificial leg, the children took turns to name them; Arlo, Charlotte, Olivia and Ronnie. The children enjoyed being a part of the dolls play, using them to speak to each other kindly.
