The Enormous Turnip

Date: 6th May 2019 @ 9:52am

We have shared the story of "The Enormous Turnip". We linked the learning to British Science week, using the theme of pulling & pushing as well as growing through different activities linking to the story. Mrs McDowell started with the element of surprise; the children felt the mystery parcel as it was passed around the circle. They guessed what could be inside. Their ideas were, “Hard, Rock, Stickers, Square, Thingy, Chicken, Power Ranger, Jengo. “ Once it had been opened the children could guess what it could be, or where it had come from. They guessed “Lemon, Potato, it feels fluffy, a Carrot, a Peach, “ after looking feeling and listening to the other children’s ideas, guessed “A Turnip.” “You get it from a farm, it’s a Turnip”  they explained to each other.  After sharing the story & looking at the real turnip the children used different media to create fantastic models of the enormous turnip. They made characters, a garden and the ‘Enormous Turnip’ from recycled waste, they also helped to make an enormous turnip out of newspaper & material.

The children all had the opportunity to use a storyboard to add the characters they wanted to be in the Enormous Turnip. When naming their characters they heard the initial sound to each name, they even tried to form the letter when writing onto the storyboard.

The rain didn't stop the children having fun outside; teamwork at it's best. They listened to the instructions given to them and followed them wonderfully to play Tug of War: pull the Turnip. Encouraging each other with lots of laughs included, just what they needed after being inside making choices of the activities that were on offer.
